Rooted in Faith,

Surrounded by Nature

About Kothduwa Rajamaha Viharaya

Nestled on a serene island in the midst of the Madu River, Kothduwa Rajamaha Viharaya stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist temples. Surrounded by tranquil waters and lush mangroves, this sacred sanctuary offers both spiritual solace and breathtaking natural beauty.

A Sacred Legacy

Kothduwa Temple is believed to have sheltered the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha during ancient times, making it a site of immense religious and historical importance. According to tradition, the relic was temporarily kept here for safekeeping before being enshrined in Kandy, the heart of Sri Lankan Buddhism.

Spiritual Significance

The temple continues to serve as a place of worship and meditation for both devotees and travelers. Its peaceful surroundings invite reflection and mindfulness, while daily rituals and traditional ceremonies preserve the deep-rooted Buddhist practices passed down through generations.

Our Monastic Life

And Community

Kothduwa Raja Maha Viharaya is not only a place of worship but also a thriving center of Buddhist monastic life. The resident monks dedicate their lives to the practice and preservation of the Dhamma, following a disciplined daily routine of meditation, chanting, and study of sacred texts.

The temple fosters a strong sense of spiritual community, welcoming devotees, pilgrims, and visitors to participate in religious observances and merit-making activities. Monks provide guidance, teach Dhamma, and organize programs that promote mindfulness, ethical living, and cultural awareness.

The temple also serves as a hub for social and religious initiatives, including educational programs for children, almsgiving ceremonies, and support for the local community. Through these activities, Kothduwa Temple nurtures both spiritual growth and communal harmony, reflecting the enduring values of Buddhism in a serene and natural environment.
